European Wineries Turn to Alcohol-Free Wine as Demand Grows

Alcohol-free wine is moving beyond a niche product as alcohol consumption declines across Europe and demand grows in Europe and North America. A family winery in Burgenland, Austria, now exports its alcohol-free wine to 26 countries and produces more of it than its regular wine.

That changes the business question for European wineries. Alcohol-free wine is no longer just an experiment on the edge of the cellar; for one family producer, it is the larger product line and an international export business.

Dealcoholization technology and changing consumer habits are driving the shift. Specialty alcohol-free drinks retailers, including one in Paris, are part of a market taking shape around people who want wine’s setting and ritual without alcohol.
