What changed
An Indian trial court sentenced a child-rape convict to life imprisonment, requiring him to remain in prison for the rest of his natural life, and awarded the survivor 1.05m rupees in compensation.
Judge Rajani Ranga also wrote the child, abused on 23 July 2023 when she was seven, a personal letter praising her courage. The letter became public after the Delhi High Court rejected the convict’s appeal for bail and suspension of sentence, and ordered that the child receive a copy alongside the compensation.
Why it matters
The letter turns a formal judgment into a direct promise to the child. Judge Ranga told her that the man she called “uncle” would grow old and die in prison, and urged her to return to ordinary childhood: school, friends, play and dreams.
That matters because the court did more than impose punishment. It acknowledged the child as someone whose words shaped the case. She told her mother, identified the man in court and asked that he remain jailed until he grew old. The judge’s letter made clear that those words had been heard.
The Delhi High Court’s order also created a rare route for that message to reach her. Pocso judgments are not publicly released because they protect victims’ identities, so the letter only surfaced when the High Court reproduced it. The Delhi State Legal Authority was directed to print it and deliver it with the compensation.
The case is striking partly because the letter is unusual. The scale of the underlying problem is not: more than 69,000 Pocso cases were recorded in India in 2024 alone. The reported effect of the letter on future reporting, recovery or court practice remains unknown.
