What changed

Ollie Pope has withdrawn independently from the draft for the inaugural Afghanistan Premier League, due to take place in the United Arab Emirates later this year.

Pope, who has a new 12-month England contract, was expected to be the only centrally contracted England player in the draft. English players need an England and Wales Cricket Board no-objection certificate to play.

Why it matters

Pope’s decision puts the choice back where England’s director of cricket Rob Key says it legally belongs: with the players. The ECB has refused bilateral cricket with Afghanistan since the Taliban returned to power in 2021, citing its treatment of women and girls, but England still faces Afghanistan in global tournaments.

That leaves a stark split between principle and policy. The board can make its position clear, yet stopping contracted players from joining a private league is legally difficult. Pope has now chosen his own line.

The question is whether others follow. Dawid Malan, Moeen Ali, James Vince and James Rew remain listed for the draft, while the league’s final participation and sanctioning arrangements are unresolved.
