What changed
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has been re-elected to a five-year term leading Ethiopia’s federal government. President Taye Atske-Selassie congratulated him and opened the new parliamentary term, with both the House of Peoples’ Representatives and the House of Federation holding their inaugural sessions.
Why it matters
Ethiopia’s political leadership now has a fresh five-year mandate and a newly convened Parliament through which that mandate must be carried out. President Taye’s message framed the task in practical terms: national vision needs both “thinking minds” and “working hands.”
That makes the parliamentary opening more than ceremony. It marks the point at which the re-elected government’s direction must become legislation, administration and results. The vote margin, Parliament’s composition and the new government’s policy timetable were not provided, so the clearest test ahead is what this new term actually does with its mandate.
