What changed

African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf reaffirmed support for Libya’s sovereignty, unity and a Libyan-led political process during an official visit on October 1, 2026. He met senior Libyan officials and, with Acting Foreign Minister Taher Al-Baour, officially reopened the African Union Liaison Office in Tripoli; Libya also allocated premises for an AUDA-NEPAD national office.

Why it matters

The AU is putting a permanent channel back in Tripoli after the liaison office operated temporarily in Tunis. That gives Libya and the Union a direct base for coordination on peace and security, governance, reconciliation, youth and women’s empowerment, counter-terrorism and transnational crime.

Youssouf tied the renewed engagement to Libya’s institutional unification, national reconciliation and eventual elections. The political message is clear: the AU wants those steps to be shaped by Libyans, while rejecting outside interference.

The practical value will depend on whether the reopened office can turn contact into measurable progress. Its first test will be whether it helps consolidate the Peace and Reconciliation Charter and Declaration of Principles while deepening Libya’s participation in Agenda 2063.
