Ahmed Shide Unanimously Elected and Sworn In as Speaker of Ethiopia’s House of Peoples’ Representatives

What changed

Ahmed Shide has been unanimously elected and sworn in as Speaker of Ethiopia’s House of Peoples’ Representatives.

The former Minister of Transport and Logistics takes charge as the seventh parliamentary term begins in Addis Ababa on October 5, 2026. His installation also marks the formal formation of Ethiopia’s new Medemer Government.

Why it matters

The House now has its presiding officer in place, giving the new parliamentary term its first formal institutional anchor. Shide’s move from the transport ministry to the speakership also places a senior government figure at the center of parliamentary proceedings.

The unanimous vote signals a clean opening for the new term, but it does not yet reveal what the House will tackle first. The next meaningful test will be the agenda it sets and how the new Medemer Government turns its formal launch into working policy.
