What changed
Inter-Parliamentary Union Secretary General Anda Filip arrived at Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro International Airport at 1:40 a.m. on September 30, ahead of the 153rd IPU Assembly in Arusha from October 5 to 9.
The assembly will be held at the Arusha International Conference Centre under the theme “Enhancing good governance and empowering communities through inclusivity, trust and opportunities for all.” Filip, elected in April and in office since July 1, is the first woman to lead the IPU Secretariat in its 137-year history.
Why it matters
Tanzania is now moving from preparation to hosting. The Arusha venue has been refurbished, hotels inspected, security arrangements made and transport organized. Those details matter because a parliamentary gathering is only as credible as the machinery that lets delegates meet, move and work without friction.
Filip’s arrival also gives the assembly a visible institutional milestone. Her leadership puts inclusion and trust at the center of an event focused on governance. That makes the October meeting more than a calendar date: it will test whether those principles can be turned into practical discussion among parliaments.
The real measure will come next week, when the assembly’s attendance, discussions and any resulting decisions become clear. Until then, Tanzania has secured the stage; the substance is still to come.
