What changed
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed won re-election in the House of Peoples’ Representatives on October 5, 2026, then took the constitutional oath for another five-year term. As Ethiopia opened its 7th parliamentary term and formed the Medemer Government, Burundi’s President and African Union Chairperson Evariste Ndayishimiye congratulated him and reaffirmed the AU’s partnership with Ethiopia.
Why it matters
Ethiopia is beginning a fresh five-year political cycle with an explicit vote of continental support. Ndayishimiye said the AU would continue working with Ethiopia on peace, regional stability, cooperation and shared economic development.
That is a meaningful diplomatic signal, but not yet a new programme or agreement. The practical weight of the message will depend on what the renewed government and the AU do with that partnership as Ethiopia advances its national priorities.
