What changed
Specialists from Tanzania’s Benjamin Mkapa Hospital completed a medical camp in Malawi that treated more than 810 patients and performed 64 surgeries. The camp, which began on September 28, 2026, ended with 49 patients referred to Benjamin Mkapa Hospital in Dodoma for further treatment.
Why it matters
This was more than a visiting surgical team. It connected care in Malawi with a treatment pathway in Tanzania, while specialists worked at Mzuzu Hospital and Kamuzu Central Hospital and shared expertise with Malawian colleagues.
Mobile surgical vehicles equipped with operating theatres made it possible to provide surgery in different settings. That gives the cooperation a practical shape: equipment and specialists moved to patients, rather than leaving every complex case to travel first.
Officials are now discussing wider cooperation on medical services, professional training, medicines and patient referrals. If those talks become a formal arrangement, the real test will be whether the 49 referrals can move smoothly from a short-term camp into sustained treatment in Dodoma.
