What changed

Botswana Vice President Ndaba Nkosinathi Gaolathe led a high-level delegation to Kenya National Police DT SACCO on October 8, 2026, seeking practical lessons to strengthen Botswana’s cooperative sector. Botswana identified potential actions and invited the Kenyan SACCO’s leadership for a reciprocal visit.

Why it matters

The visit puts governance and digital access at the centre of Botswana’s cooperative ambitions. Discussions covered board discipline, member education, savings mobilisation, digital financial services, financial sustainability and partnerships.

Kenya National Police DT SACCO described its digital platform as its “biggest branch,” while stressing that technology works only when it follows changing member needs. That is the useful lesson here: transformation is not simply an app launch. It also requires stronger oversight, deeper savings habits and institutions capable of adapting.

The next test is whether the exchange produces a timetable, funding or a formal cooperation agreement. None was reported, so for now this is a serious benchmarking exercise with a promised second leg, not yet a completed reform programme.
