What changed
Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos and Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar met in Addis Ababa on October 9 to expand cooperation between Ethiopia and India in education, culture, trade, investment and digitalization. The talks took place during Jaishankar’s working visit to Ethiopia, with India also praising Ethiopia’s active participation in its recent BRICS Summit.
Why it matters
The meeting puts several parts of the Ethiopia–India relationship on the same table: classrooms, cultural ties, business, investment and digital systems. That breadth matters because cooperation here is still a direction of travel, not a finished deal. No funding, trade target, implementation timetable or formal agreement was reported.
The BRICS connection gives the talks a wider diplomatic setting. Ethiopia’s participation in the summit hosted by India has become part of the relationship’s political currency, linking bilateral discussions in Addis Ababa to the two countries’ work inside the multilateral grouping.
The next meaningful test will be whether these broad priorities turn into specific programmes, investment commitments or agreements that people and institutions can actually use.
