What changed
Ethiopia and Nigeria opened a senior leadership exchange on nutrition in Addis Ababa on October 7, 2026. Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Truneh and Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima jointly launched the “Moving the Needle on Nutrition” initiative.
Ethiopia presented its Seqota Declaration experience, including:
- high-level political leadership for nutrition;
- joint planning across health, agriculture, education and water;
- costed plans at woreda level;
- federal and regional financing;
- performance monitoring and accountability;
- expanded interventions and food fortification.
Why it matters
The exchange puts implementation, not just ambition, at the centre of the two countries’ cooperation. Ethiopia’s message was blunt: a priority needs a plan, a plan needs a budget, and a budget needs accountability.
That matters because nutrition policy crosses ministries. A health programme can struggle if agriculture, education, water and local administration are working to different plans. Ethiopia is offering Nigeria a practical framework for coordinating those pieces and adapting them to local needs.
The political test now is whether the exchange produces binding commitments, new funding or measurable improvements in nutrition. Those outcomes were not established at the opening. For now, the concrete development is a formal channel for the two governments to compare approaches and strengthen African-led action on malnutrition.
