What changed
Ethiopia closed its embassy in Asmara on October 1, 2026, and declared 10 Eritrean diplomats in Addis Ababa persona non grata. It is a new diplomatic rupture between the two neighbours, whose relationship sits at the centre of wider Horn of Africa peace and integration efforts.
Why it matters
Closing an embassy removes one of the basic channels for managing disputes. Expelling diplomats makes that channel narrower still. Ethiopia has presented peace, economic integration, infrastructure links, energy cooperation and trade as part of a wider regional project, so a sharper break with Eritrea risks putting that project under added political strain.
The next phase is unclear. Eritrea’s response has not been reported, and there is no indication yet whether ties will be restored or deteriorate further. The practical question is whether both governments keep the rupture contained or allow it to harden into another cycle of confrontation.
