What changed
Ethiopia brought 1,701 citizens home from Saudi Arabia on October 5, including 26 children and 32 adolescents under 18.
The returnees are receiving assistance at the airport and temporary accommodation centers. Authorities are also working to reunite them with their families and support their reintegration.
Why it matters
This is more than a flight home. It shows Ethiopia’s effort to treat repatriation as an ongoing protection system, with help continuing after citizens arrive.
The operation began on September 15, 2025, and has now returned more than 105,000 Ethiopians from difficult circumstances abroad. The inclusion of 58 people under 18 makes family reunification especially immediate: the next step is not simply reaching Ethiopia, but reconnecting returnees with the homes and communities they left.
