What changed

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed used the opening of Ethiopia’s 7th House of Peoples’ Representatives in Addis Ababa on October 5 to define national resilience around three ideas: unity, preparedness and Medemer.

He linked Ethiopia’s ability to withstand internal conflict and external invasion to collective strength, while warning that rapid changes across East Africa, the Red Sea, the Gulf and the wider Middle East will affect the country whether it seeks them or not.

Why it matters

Abiy’s message turns regional uncertainty into a domestic test. Ethiopia cannot treat geopolitics as something happening beyond its borders; its position in East Africa makes surrounding shifts part of its own strategic environment.

The historical warning was pointed. Abiy said Ethiopia paid a heavy price during the Second Italian Invasion after failing to preserve the level of preparation that had preceded its victory at Adwa. His argument is that unity without readiness is fragile: national confidence must be matched by institutions, awareness and the ability to respond.

He also placed that preparedness inside a longer political project. Ethiopia’s political order, he said, cannot be built overnight. It must develop gradually, with patience and composure, around Medemer, an indigenous philosophy intended to address Ethiopia’s own challenges rather than rely on borrowed models.

That makes the speech more than a call for vigilance. It presents Medemer as the bridge between internal institution-building and external strategy. The immediate question is whether that language will lead to concrete policies, budgets or security measures. None was announced in the address.
