What changed
President Taye Atske-Selassie has named fertilizer manufacturing and natural-gas development as priorities in Ethiopia’s push for economic independence.
Speaking in Addis Ababa on October 12 at the country’s 19th National Flag Day observance, he linked both sectors to stronger domestic production, food security and industrial growth.
Why it matters
The message puts fertilizer and gas inside the same national project: building the capacity to meet key needs with Ethiopia’s own resources.
For farmers and pastoralists, fertilizer manufacturing is tied to more reliable access to essential agricultural inputs. That could support productivity and food-security goals. Natural-gas development, meanwhile, is being framed as a way to strengthen the industrial base and turn resource potential into wider economic activity.
That is a significant political ambition, but it is not yet an implementation plan. No projects, financing, production targets or timelines were announced. The next test will be whether the government turns this sovereignty-focused language into concrete investment and production decisions.
