What changed
Ethiopia will mark its 19th National Flag Day on Monday under the theme “Our Flag for National Consensus and Unity.”
President Taye Atske-Selassie will lead the central ceremony, where the Ethiopian National Defence Force’s band and honour guard will accompany the flag-raising. Regional administrations, city authorities, schools, government institutions, and Ethiopian diplomatic missions will hold ceremonies at the same time.
Why it matters
This is a nationwide civic exercise, not a single ceremony in Addis Ababa. The House of Peoples’ Representatives is placing the flag at the centre of a message about sovereignty, national dignity, consensus, and unity, with the observance reaching institutions and Ethiopians abroad.
The military presence gives the central event a formal and state-backed character, while the parallel ceremonies turn it into a shared national ritual. That broad reach matters because the theme asks different parts of the country to rally around one symbol and one political idea: unity.
The ceremony will show how strongly that message is being presented across Ethiopia. It will not, by itself, establish whether the observance leads to policy changes or measurable shifts in national cohesion.
