What changed
Gedion Timothewos has been reappointed Ethiopia’s foreign minister for a second five-year government term. He took the constitutional oath before the House of Peoples’ Representatives on October 8, formally beginning his second mandate under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s new government.
The appointment follows Ethiopia’s June 1 general election and the opening of the seventh parliamentary term. Abiy was re-elected prime minister and sworn in on October 5.
Why it matters
Ethiopia’s foreign ministry keeps the same leader as the new government starts its five-year mandate. That gives the ministry continuity while Ethiopia manages its engagement with neighboring countries, African institutions and international partners.
The important question now is not who holds the post, but what Gedion’s second term will prioritize. The appointment establishes continuity; the government’s diplomatic agenda will show whether that means steady execution or a shift in emphasis.
