What changed

Kenya’s Tourism Regulatory Authority has stepped up preparations with hotels and other hospitality establishments in Western Kenya ahead of the East African National Classification Exercise. The exercise will assess classification, safety and security, and service standards, with Tourist Police Unit Commandant Lydia Ligami leading the security component.

Why it matters

For operators, this turns classification from a paperwork exercise into a practical test of how safely and consistently they run their businesses. Hotels may need to tighten documented safety procedures and improve service standards before assessments begin.

That matters in a region built around Lake Victoria, Kakamega Forest, cultural attractions and emerging hospitality centres. Stronger security engagement could improve conditions for visitors and guests over the next six to 12 months if establishments put the recommended measures into practice.

TRA director of standards and accreditation Frederick Omondi linked the push to Western Kenya’s ambition to become a more competitive and sustainable tourism destination. The timing and enforcement of the exercise remain unclear, but its direction is plain: service quality and visitor safety are being treated as part of the region’s tourism infrastructure.
