What changed
Kenya plans to make doping offences criminal from January 2027. President William Ruto said the law will be aligned with the World Anti-Doping Agency’s Code and Rules, with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations’ Anti-Narcotics Unit involved in enforcement.
Why it matters
This would move Kenya’s anti-doping system beyond sports regulation and into criminal enforcement. Athletes and sports federations would face a tougher legal framework, while investigators could gain a formal role in cases that have previously sat mainly within sporting institutions.
Ruto made the announcement after meeting WADA President Witold Bańka in Nairobi. Bańka’s three-day visit includes meetings with sports federations and the National Olympic Committee of Kenya, giving those bodies an early chance to respond before the planned January 2027 start.
Kenya first domesticated its anti-doping law in 2016. The important question now is what the new legislation actually criminalises, what penalties it sets, and how the Anti-Narcotics Unit’s role will work in practice.
