What changed

Fitch revised Nigeria’s sovereign credit outlook from Stable to Positive. The Nigerian government has publicly addressed the revision, which Fitch linked to growing foreign-exchange reserves, easing inflation and economic reforms.

Why it matters

A Positive outlook means Fitch sees Nigeria’s credit direction as improving, but it is not the same as a confirmed upgrade to the country’s rating grade. That distinction matters: the signal is encouraging, while the formal credit category remains unclear from the information available.

The reasons Fitch cited also point to the areas Nigeria must keep improving. More foreign-exchange reserves can strengthen its external position. Slower inflation can ease pressure on households and businesses. Continued reforms would help determine whether this brighter assessment holds.
