What changed

Nigeria’s eye clinics are being positioned as more than places to treat vision problems. The proposed approach links them with primary health centres, schools and community groups to provide education, screening and a route into further care.

The model aligns with the NHSRII’s focus on bringing care closer to communities and with the Ministry of Health’s effort to include eye care in primary health centres.

Why it matters

The useful shift is simple: eye care becomes an entry point, not a dead end. Someone reached through a school, community group or local clinic could receive basic information and screening, then be directed onward when further care is needed.

That matters because the system is built around places people already use. It also gives primary health centres a clearer role in eye health instead of leaving the work to specialist clinics alone.

The idea is promising, but its practical value will depend on how it is carried out. The locations, funding, scale, screening results and implementation dates have not been specified.
