What changed
Poet Ogaga Ifowodo has won the Nigeria Prize for Literature, worth $100,000.
His winning collection examines religious and political violence in Nigeria through the imagined voice of a victim.
Why it matters
The prize puts a substantial value on a work that asks readers to enter the experience of violence, rather than view it from a safe distance. That choice gives the award its weight: the collection is not simply about public conflict, but about how conflict is lived and remembered by the people caught inside it.
Ifowodo’s win also places poetry at the centre of a national literary conversation about Nigeria’s most painful realities. The money is significant, but so is the recognition of a poem’s ability to make violence intimate, personal and difficult to look away from.
