What changed
World Athletics Competition Management Director Pierce O’Callaghan has begun Kenya’s first inspection since the country won the right to host the 22nd World Athletics Championships in September 2029. He toured Kasarani Stadium on Wednesday, then Nyayo Stadium and Ulinzi Sports Complex on Thursday, before meeting Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi.
Why it matters
This moves Kenya’s hosting bid from celebration into preparation. The three venues are now part of World Athletics’ early assessment, while the Sports Ministry and Athletics Kenya face the practical task of shaping upgrades for an event Kenya will host as the first African country to stage the championships.
Kenya secured the event ahead of Rome and London last month in Budapest. The inspection does not yet disclose a renovation budget, timetable or compliance verdict, so the next meaningful test will be whether those visits produce a clear upgrade plan before September 2029.
