What changed
Senegal’s challenge to the Confederation of African Football’s decision to remove its African Cup of Nations title will be heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland on 8 October 2026. CAF applied Articles 82 and 84 after Senegal left the field for more than 10 minutes during the final, then returned as the match finished 1-0 in Senegal’s favour; CAF later declared Morocco the winner.
Why it matters
This case will decide whether a referee’s decision to let a match continue can survive a later disciplinary ruling. Congolese referee Jean-Jacques Ndala allowed the final to reach its conclusion, while CAF said Senegal’s walkout automatically triggered rules requiring elimination and a 3-0 result.
That makes the dispute larger than one trophy. A Senegal victory would reinforce the referee’s authority during the match. A CAF victory would confirm that tournament officials can revisit the result afterward when conduct breaches competition rules.
The hearing may not bring an immediate final judgment. CAF President Patrice Motsepe has said the organisation will respect and implement the CAS ruling.
