What changed

Tanzania’s Anglican Church formally installed Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba as a Lay Canon on October 4, 2026, making him the first person outside the Anglican denomination to hold the honorary position, according to the church. The ceremony took place at Christ the King Cathedral in Chanika, Tanga, where Canon Charles Mika Lundu was also consecrated as the first Bishop of the Diocese of Handeni. Nchemba attended as President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s representative.

Why it matters

The title gives a formal shape to a relationship the government says it wants to deepen with religious institutions. Nchemba pledged continued cooperation and pointed to changes involving charitable status, tax debts and exemptions for some services provided by religious organisations.

The practical details of those measures remain unspecified, including their value and implementation timetable. But the message was clear: the government sees churches as partners in carrying out social and spiritual responsibilities, not simply as institutions to be left to their own affairs.

Nchemba received the title on June 21 for helping mobilise support for church development and investment projects. Its formal conferral now links that recognition to a public ceremony centred on both church leadership and state representation. That makes the appointment notable beyond the honour itself: it places cooperation between Tanzania’s government and religious institutions directly inside the ceremony’s symbolism.
