What changed
Tanzania’s annual headline inflation held at 4.3% in September 2026, the same rate recorded in August. The National Consumer Price Index rose from 119.86 to 125.07 year-on-year, while food inflation reached 3.9% and transport recorded the sharpest increase at 14.0%.
Why it matters
The headline figure looks stable, but it hides a clear pressure point: transport costs are rising far faster than the overall basket. That can make movement and deliveries more expensive even while the national inflation rate appears calm.
Food prices were also moving upward, though less sharply at 3.9%. The key uncertainty is what drove transport inflation and how much of that increase reached household budgets. If transport remains the main source of pressure, the next inflation readings will show whether September was a temporary spike or a widening gap beneath an otherwise steady headline rate.
