What changed
Tanzania’s environment minister, Hamad Yussuf Masauni, has told residents in high-risk areas along the Msimbazi River and elsewhere in flood-prone parts of the country to move to safer accommodation before possible El Niño conditions worsen flooding.
The warning came during Masauni’s visit to Dar es Salaam. Ilala officials also said the Pugu Kinyamwezi landfill had received a new excavator, while the government renewed its call to stop dumping waste in rivers and drainage channels.
Why it matters
This turns flood preparation into a direct relocation warning. For communities along the Msimbazi River, the danger is not only rising water but the loss of a safe place to remain if heavy rains arrive.
The government is pairing the warning with a practical cleanup measure: improving landfill operations and clearing waterways. That matters because blocked drainage can leave even a short burst of severe rain with nowhere to go.
The outlook is still conditional. El Niño conditions are described as possible, and authorities have not specified relocation sites, enforcement measures, rainfall probabilities or a deadline. But the message is already clear: people living in the most exposed areas are being asked to act before the weather makes that choice for them.
