What changed
Turaco has promoted Cedrick Todwell to Chief Commercial Officer, Africa, effective October 1, 2026. He will oversee commercial strategy, revenue growth, partnerships and market expansion across the continent.
The microinsurance company says it reaches more than eight million people through partnerships with banks, microfinance institutions, fintechs, telecoms and other distributors. It operates in Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana, Zambia and Tanzania, entered Pakistan this year, and is considering Rwanda.
Why it matters
This is a commercial expansion job with regulatory consequences attached. Todwell’s brief is not simply to sell more policies. He must turn Turaco’s existing partnerships into broader distribution while helping the company enter more African underwriting markets.
Turaco currently holds insurance licences in Kenya and Uganda, plus a microinsurance underwriting licence in Nigeria. It plans to launch in two additional African underwriting markets by the end of 2026, subject to approval. The company has not identified those markets or said when either launch will happen.
Its model depends on placing life, health and asset insurance inside services people already use, including financial and digital platforms. That can widen access without requiring customers to seek out a traditional insurer, but it also makes the strength of each partnership central to growth.
Turaco is also using artificial intelligence for customer onboarding, engagement and claims processing. If that reduces the time and cost of serving policyholders, it could support expansion across several markets at once. Todwell’s immediate test will be whether that operating model can move from a strong East African base into a larger, more regulated continental business.
