What changed

Xolela Madlanga, a 33-year-old artist from Mthatha, has been selected as one of 15 candidates from 700 applicants for Création Africa’s seven-month incubation and immersion programme, hosted by the French Institute of South Africa.

Madlanga founded Emotives Africa in 2022, turning pattern-making into a business producing artwork and lifestyle products for garments, ceramics, cushions and brands. Her work draws on Ndebele patterns, the Johannesburg skyline and Mthatha’s landscapes without settling for predictable “African” decoration.

Why it matters

Madlanga’s work shows how cultural references can become a design language rather than a costume. For a Nigerian collaboration, she used symbols connected to the brand’s Niger roots. For House of Sebo, she translated Sotho forms into something more abstract. The difference matters: the source of an idea remains visible, but the result still belongs to the artist’s own imagination.

Her path also puts the business side of creativity in plain view. She began with doodles, face art and a showcase in Gqeberha, then built Emotives Africa into collaborations with Alia Bare, House of Sebo and Tsikane African Decor. In 2024, she created 12 limited-edition scarves with Fabric Bank, each honouring a woman who shaped her life. She was also a 2026 finalist in the Fashionomics Africa Accelerator Programme.

Création Africa gives that progression a new level of recognition, but its practical effect will depend on what follows. Madlanga hopes to work with more South African fashion and interior designers, as well as footwear brands such as Bathu Sneakers. The immediate story is not a promised commercial breakthrough; it is an artist from Mthatha being given a larger platform to turn local observation, memory and abstraction into work other businesses can use.
