“60 Minutes” opened its 59th season with a largely familiar episode, offering limited evidence of a major on-air shift under new CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The premiere retained longtime correspondents Lesley Stahl and Norah O’Donnell, while Jon Wertheim led a 15-minute segment on Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams. The report described that piece as a conventional “60 Minutes” puff segment, though its timing made it feel dated after the Rams’ loss to the 49ers.
New York Times veteran Ross Douthat also appeared briefly at the episode’s close. The report characterized his 60 seconds as dull but not meaningfully disruptive.
The most visible changes were modest. The program’s iconic ticking stopwatch appeared against a backdrop that was more white than red, and the correspondent introductions were adjusted slightly. The Hollywood Reporter’s assessment was that the episode was flat and had obvious problems, but did not substantially confirm either optimistic or pessimistic predictions about Weiss’ influence.
For viewers chiefly interested in television’s familiar personalities and production choices, the premiere suggested a cautious transition rather than a wholesale reinvention. Its established format and returning correspondents remained more prominent than the new contributors associated with Weiss and executive producer Nick Bilton.
