Variety has published a positive review of Ashgan El-Hamus’ fiction debut, “Al Baraneya,” describing a documentary-like portrait of rural Egyptian family life. This account is based on reporting by Variety.
The film centers on Amal, played by Reem Amer, a pregnant woman living with her parents and siblings in the Egyptian village of Al Baraneya while her husband Omar, played by Mostafa Noureldin, tries to raise money for their future home.
According to Variety, El-Hamus cast relatives in nearly every role and developed the story through months of workshops with Amer, the production’s one professional actor. The review highlights the family’s jasmine picking and wheat farming, as well as mounting financial pressure and their resistance to selling the family fields.
El-Hamus, who was raised in the Netherlands, filmed with a Dutch crew in the hometown of her extended family, Variety reported. The review frames the film’s central tension around tradition, land and Amal’s growing uncertainty about the life set before her.
