Beta Film is distributing “Rex, Vienna Calling” worldwide as production begins on the series’ second season.
Six new feature-length episodes are shooting in Vienna, with sales reported to SBS in Australia, Rai in Italy, TV 2 in Denmark, and broadcasters across Greece, Croatia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Romania and the Baltic states. Action Channel in Japan and SHANT TV in Armenia are also reported as buyers, while further deals remain under negotiation.
Maximilian Brückner returns as detective Max Steiner, who works with German Shepherd Rex on cases across the Austrian capital. MR Film is producing in co-production with SAT.1 and ORF.
The first season reached almost 1.6 million viewers on SAT.1. It averaged 701,000 viewers and a 27% share on ORF, while its Rai 2 premiere drew more than 750,000 viewers before catch-up and on-demand viewing pushed the total above one million.
No release date or deal values for season two have been reported.
