The Emmy Awards take place Monday in Los Angeles, with The Pitt, Hacks, Beef and Pluribus among the leading contenders, according to BBC News. The account is based on the BBC’s reporting.
Noah Wyle is nominated for best drama actor for The Pitt, which is defending last year’s best drama win and has eight acting nominations. In comedy, Hacks is competing after its fifth and final season, with Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder among its nominees.
Smart has won four Emmys for Hacks. Another victory would give her eight overall, matching the totals of Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Cloris Leachman, the BBC reports.
Netflix’s second season of Beef is a contender in the limited or anthology categories, with Carey Mulligan and Oscar Isaac nominated for acting. Other nominees include All Her Fault, The Beast in Me and DTF St Louis, which performed strongly at last week’s Creative Arts Emmys.
British nominees include Riz Ahmed, Rufus Sewell, Kate O’Flynn, Gary Oldman and Jack Lowden. Matthew Rhys is nominated in two lead-actor categories, for comedy series Widow’s Bay and limited series The Beast in Me.
The awards also highlight an eligibility gap for Heated Rivalry, the ice-hockey romance starring Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams. The BBC says the series does not qualify because it is a fully financed Canadian production without the US involvement required for Emmy recognition.
That rule has drawn comparisons with Schitt’s Creek, which dominated the Emmys in 2021 despite its Canadian identity. The earlier series qualified through US financial and broadcast partnerships, including creator and star Dan Levy’s American-based production company.
