Italian film Idda premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in the TIFF Platform competition, where it explores female friendship, grief and memory against the landscape of Sicily’s Mount Etna, according to Variety.
Directed by Irene Dionisio, the film stars Tecla Insolia and Romana Maggiora Vergano as Sofia and Adele, childhood friends who climb the active volcano together. Their journey brings unresolved resentment, past secrets and fear of change to the surface.
In Sicilian dialect, “idda” means “she,” and is also used for Mount Etna, known as the “she-volcano.” Dionisio described the mountain as both maternal and dangerous, with the ascent mirroring the women’s emotional search through memory, friendship, desire and adulthood.
The director said the film is dedicated to her best friend, who died suddenly several years ago. She also connected the story to her own approach to motherhood and the uncertainties surrounding major changes in life.
Produced by Kino Produzioni, EDI Effetti Digitali Italiani, Andromeda Film and Wise Pictures, Idda is handled internationally by Rai Cinema International Distribution. Its TIFF Platform placement also carries awards significance: beginning this year, the competition’s non-English-language winner will be directly eligible for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.
