Jason Zada’s horror film “Terrarium” is being shot with actors on an otherwise empty soundstage while artificial intelligence generates most of the movie’s locations, props and group compositions, according to Variety.
The film follows four teenagers who take shelter underground after an unspecified catastrophe. During production, performers film separately against a bare stage, with their images later composited into apparent group scenes. A team of 15 to 20 AI artists is generating settings including a convenience store and an underground tunnel.
“Terrarium” is a co-production between Zada’s Secret Label and Artlist, which is financing the project. Its cast includes Jake Busey, Ace Greene, Kylee Levien and Austin Willard. The production has a 26-person crew and is targeting completion by next week, but it has not yet secured a distributor.
Zada describes the project as a microbudget production intended to resemble a much larger film. The budget remains undisclosed, and the film’s eventual quality, cost savings, commercial performance and distribution remain unknown.
