Jeremy Thomas, the Oscar-winning British producer whose career spanned more than half a century, has died at 77, according to Variety. His team said he died peacefully at his country home in Oxfordshire late Friday, Sept. 11, surrounded by family and loved ones.
Thomas founded the Recorded Picture Company and later co-founded Hanway Films. According to Variety, he helped produce more than 80 features, working with filmmakers including Bernardo Bertolucci, Jonathan Glazer, David Cronenberg, Nagisa Oshima, Jim Jarmusch, Werner Herzog, Takashi Miike and Wim Wenders.
He won the best picture Oscar for Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor in 1988, one of nine Academy Awards received by the film. His credits also included Sexy Beast, Crash, A Dangerous Method and Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, Variety reported.
Thomas continued producing late in his career. Herzog’s Bucking Fastard, starring Rooney and Kate Mara, premiered at this year’s Venice Film Festival, while his latest collaboration with Miike, Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo, is scheduled to world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on Sept. 14.
Born in London in 1949, Thomas was the son of director Ralph Thomas and nephew of Carry On director Gerald Thomas. He began in film editing before producing Mad Dog Morgan in 1976 and launching the Recorded Picture Company with Skolimowski’s The Shout, which competed at Cannes and won the festival’s Grand Prix du Jury.
