Bassam Tariq and Mahershala Ali premiered Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother at the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday night, ahead of its theatrical release Sept. 25, according to Variety.
The film follows Latif (Ali), a devout Muslim hitman who flees with his teenage daughter, 10-year-old son and newborn baby after his wife’s sudden death. Their journey for breast milk brings them into conflict with Latif’s boss and Hwan, played by John Cho, the armed leader of an anti-pornography Christian cult.
Ali uses the long-blade combat skills he developed while preparing to play Marvel’s Blade. Tariq was hired to direct that film in 2021 but left the project in 2022 after production delays, remaining an executive producer. Ali confirmed in July 2026 that Blade was no longer moving forward, Variety reported.
At the film’s post-premiere Q&A at Toronto’s Princess of Wales Theatre, Ali described the production as an intense experience shaped by the demands of the role and by working with his onscreen children. Adia, who plays Latif’s rebellious daughter, praised Ali for giving her room to explore difficult scenes.
Ali and Tariq also credited stunt coordinator Adam Hart with choreographing the fight sequences on a tight schedule. Ali said he resumed martial-arts training in Los Angeles during Ramadan and began filming after the fasting period ended.
For global entertainment audiences, the film represents a notable reunion between Tariq and Ali while giving Ali a dramatically different outlet for skills developed during the long-running superhero project. Variety characterized Ali’s performance as a potential awards contender, while Adia’s role marks a breakout turn highlighted in the report.
