A live-action film inspired by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and The Little Prince is in development, with Morten Tyldum set to direct and Oscar-winning screenwriter Simon Beaufoy writing the script.
The big-scale family adventure is being developed with Le Petit Prince Groupe, guardian of the Saint-Exupéry estate. Aton Soumache and Paul Trijbits are producing through Magical Society.
The project will combine Saint-Exupéry’s real-life story as an aviator and writer with the fantastical world of The Little Prince. Saint-Exupéry’s story will be told in live action, while the Little Prince will be created with visual effects.
The film will draw on Joann Sfar’s graphic adaptation, which portrays the relationship between the Little Prince and the Aviator. Sfar said the project grew from his longstanding relationship with the Saint-Exupéry family.
The 1943 book has sold more than 200 million copies worldwide and has been translated into about 600 languages and dialects. Soumache previously produced the 2015 animated film, which grossed close to $100 million worldwide and won the César for best animated film and the BAFTA Children’s Award for best feature film.
No release date, cast, distributor, financing details, production start date or budget has been announced.
