Jordanian filmmakers Raghad Albakheet and Danial Salman are developing separate debut feature films following the international recognition of their short “A Subconscious Dive,” according to reporting by Variety.
Directed by Albakheet and produced by Salman, “A Subconscious Dive” became only the second Jordanian film to receive Student Academy recognition after reaching the semifinalist shortlist in the Alternative/Experimental category. The film was produced through the Jordan Cinema Academy program.
The short follows a woman during a hypnotherapy session as she revisits memories from childhood, adolescence, adulthood and motherhood. Its underwater imagery was filmed in Aqaba, where Albakheet completed scuba-diving training so she could shoot the sequences herself. Production also took place at the Al Azraq Wetland Reserve, with logistical support from the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature.
Salman said the student production was made with a budget of $4,231 and required transporting cast, crew, equipment and props from Amman while coordinating with the guardians of child actors.
The recognition gives both filmmakers a higher-profile platform as they move into features.
