The Red Sea International Film Festival canceled its planned early December 2026 edition and said it will return in the fourth quarter of 2027 with a “renewed vision.”
The cancellation comes amid regional security concerns and a possible reprioritization of Saudi spending. Dubai-based media consultant Mazen Hayek said reducing festival spending may fit Riyadh’s focus on Riyadh Expo 2030 and the 2034 FIFA World Cup. The relative weight of security, budget priorities and reputational concerns remains unclear.
The decision also follows news that the long-defunct Dubai Film Festival plans to return in 2027, creating a potential shift in the region’s festival calendar.
The Red Sea festival launched as Saudi Arabia sought to improve its international image after the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Critics viewed the event and other celebrity-focused initiatives as reputation-rehabilitation efforts, while festival executives said they were helping build a Saudi film industry after cinemas reopened.
The festival became known for lavish hospitality and major celebrity appearances, including Will Smith, Gwyneth Paltrow, Michelle Williams, Halle Berry, Dakota Johnson, Uma Thurman and Michael Caine. Its Red Sea Fund will continue financing Arab films, and Red Sea Film Foundation CEO Faisal Baltyuor said international filmmakers and stars would remain part of the festival’s future.
