Russell Crowe Gets Emotional at Venice Premiere of Music Documentary

Russell Crowe became emotional at the Venice Film Festival premiere of his self-directed music documentary What Love Builds, wiping tears from his eyes before leaving a brief, rowdy ovation. This account is based on reporting by Variety.

The Friday-night screening in the Sala Darsena opened with a fan shouting, “We love you Russell Crowe!” The audience clapped and cheered throughout the film, which combines live performances with interviews about Crowe’s film and music careers.

Premiering out of competition, What Love Builds includes concert footage, archive photographs and interviews recorded over the past 15 years. Crowe has performed with bands including 30 Odd Foot of Grunts, the Ordinary Fear of God and Indoor Garden Party.

The documentary presents music and acting as connected forms of storytelling and performance. That crossover gives the film particular relevance for audiences following Crowe beyond his best-known screen roles, including his Oscar-winning performance in 2000’s Gladiator.

Crowe, 62, made his directorial debut with 2014’s The Water Diviner and later directed Poker Face, released in 2022. His recent acting work includes Nuremberg and The Weight.
