Sebastian Stan Defends ‘Fjord’ Against ‘MAGA Movie’ Label

Sebastian Stan is defending “Fjord” against online claims that it is a “MAGA movie,” saying those labels come from people who have not seen the film. In Variety’s report, Stan said he hopes the film can encourage audiences in a divided country to sit together in one theater.

Directed by Cristian Mungiu, “Fjord” stars Stan as Mihai, a fundamentalist father whose children are taken by the state. Inspired by a real family, the film marks Mungiu’s first English-language feature and Stan’s first Romanian-language role. It explores immigration, family and the question of what parents pass on to their children, according to Variety.

Stan, who received an Oscar nomination for 2024’s “The Apprentice” and won a Golden Globe for “A Different Man,” said “Fjord” was a project he had pursued since adolescence. The role also represents a return, in part, to Romania and to the language he grew up speaking.

The actor also discussed “The Batman 2,” though he did not confirm reports that he may play Harvey Dent. Stan praised Matt Reeves’ three-year effort on the film, telling Variety that he sometimes feels the production is making “fucking ‘Godfather Part Two.’”

For entertainment audiences following both awards-oriented filmmaking and major franchise casting, the comments show Stan balancing a personal, Romanian-language drama with an undisclosed role in a high-profile DC sequel.
