Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus Zero has made history as the first film in the 72-year-old franchise to receive an R rating. The sequel to the 2023 hit Godzilla Minus One held its world premiere at the New York Film Festival, where it drew a rapturous response from the audience at Alice Tully Hall.
The movie is rated R for "violent content/bloody images." While studios have traditionally viewed the rating as a commercial barrier for big-budget, four-quadrant releases, Yamazaki insisted that the specific level of violence was essential to the storytelling. He told Variety that censoring or cutting those scenes was "not an option" for him, despite the potential impact on audience reach.
Yamazaki acknowledged that the R rating historically carried a negative connotation for wide-release films. However, he pointed to recent commercial successes that have shifted that perception. Films such as Deadpool & Wolverine and The Odyssey have demonstrated that mature-rated blockbusters can achieve significant box office returns, helping to create an expectation among modern audiences that the director's vision remains uncensored.
The film’s premiere took place on Saturday, September 26, 2026. New York Film Festival director Dennis Lim noted that while giant monster movies are not typically associated with major film festivals, the organizers felt it was time to bring one to their program. During the Q&A session, Yamazaki thanked the crowd for their enthusiasm and asked fans to refrain from posting spoilers on social media, emphasizing that the audience was the first to witness the sequel's surprises.
The production stems from the success of Godzilla Minus One, which became a roaring hit after its initial release. Yamazaki stated he did not initially intend to make a sequel, but Toho executives began requesting a follow-up shortly after viewing the first cut of the previous film. The new installment is scheduled for a wider theatrical release later this year.
