Ayo Edebiri, Lily-Rose Depp, Michelle Yeoh, Patricia Arquette, Courteney Cox and other film figures gathered Friday night at TIFF for Variety and Chanel’s annual Women in Film dinner, according to Variety’s report.
The event honored women and nonbinary filmmakers represented in this year’s Toronto International Film Festival lineup. Attendees included Sarah Paulson, Colman Domingo, Fala Chen, Noomi Rapace, Luke Evans, David Harbour, Jessica Henwick, Mackenzie Davis and others.
Variety co-president and co-editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh said women’s representation in entertainment has improved but still requires work. He noted that none of the 15 highest-grossing films this year had been directed solely by a woman, according to the report.
TIFF’s official selection offers a more encouraging measure: 35% of the lineup was directed or co-directed by women, including Rachel Morrison’s “Love of Your Life” and Beth de Araújo’s “Josephine.” Variety reported that figure reached a goal TIFF had set for 2028, two years early.
The dinner also spotlighted filmmakers working across roles. Fala Chen was recognized as an actor-director, while Cox launched her directorial debut, “Evil Genius,” at the festival. The gathering also featured discussion of Chanel’s Women Creators’ Network, an extension of TIFF Share Her Journey’s annual Writers’ Lab.
For Celebrity Trends Today’s global entertainment audience, the evening connects red-carpet visibility with the less visible question of who gets to direct, write and produce films. The report provides a snapshot of an industry celebrating measurable progress while acknowledging that parity remains unfinished.
