Topic Studios is bringing “The Debut,” “Club Kid” and “Wicker” into a concentrated festival-and-release stretch, with Jesse Eisenberg’s “The Debut” screening at Telluride, “Club Kid” following its Cannes debut, and Black Bear set to release “Wicker” in a month. “The Debut,” Eisenberg’s follow-up to “A Real Pain,” stars Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti. Jordan Firstman’s “Club Kid” first screened at Cannes in May, while “Wicker” debuted at Sundance in January.
Founded in 2017, Topic is a First Look Media division whose previous projects include Pablo Larraín’s “Spencer,” Michael Angelo Covino’s “The Climb” and Oscar winner “Spotlight,” according to Variety.
Ryan Heller, Topic’s film and documentary head, said the company primarily develops or finances films through production and gravitates toward writer-directors. He described its focus as distinctive, filmmaker-driven work that may need to fight for attention but can still reach substantial audiences.
Impact assessment
For Topic, the slate gives the studio multiple near-term opportunities to put its development and financing work before festival and theatrical audiences. For Black Bear, the planned “Wicker” release makes its distribution execution the next key stage for a Sundance-premiering Topic-backed film.
