“Verity” is projected to lead the North American box office this weekend with a domestic opening of $30 million to $35 million from 3,510 theaters. The result could give Anne Hathaway her third No. 1 opening of 2026, following “The Devil Wears Prada 2” and “The Odyssey.”
Tom Cruise’s “Digger,” directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, is projected to open at $12 million to $15 million across 3,300 North American screens. The R-rated environmental satire reportedly carries a budget that rose from $125 million to between $160 million and $180 million after production ran over schedule, according to four knowledgeable sources.
“Verity,” produced for $40 million, stars Hathaway alongside Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett. Directed by Michael Showalter, it follows a struggling writer hired to complete the books of author Verity Crawford after Crawford is badly injured in a car accident. Reviews have been mixed.
The film is the latest adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s work. “It Ends With Us” opened to $50 million and grossed $350 million globally, while “Reminders of Him” opened to $17 million and “Regretting You” to $13.6 million.
For Amazon MGM, “Verity” could provide a rebound after “Masters of the Universe,” which grossed $113 million globally against a reported $200 million budget. The studio’s “Project Hail Mary” has grossed $684 million globally.
“Digger” arrives during a difficult year for Warner Bros., whose recent releases have included “The Bride!” and “Supergirl.” Paramount’s acquisition of Warner Bros. is expected to close next week, adding industry significance to a weekend whose projections may still change once final grosses are reported.
