Britain’s Elite Sport Events Face Rising Ticket and TV Costs

Ticket rises and more TV packages - why is price of sport increasing?

What changed

The cost of watching elite sport in Britain is climbing sharply. A day at the 2027 Ashes at Edgbaston will cost at least £115, Wimbledon’s standard singles-final seats will reach £400, and Silverstone Sunday general admission will be £289.

Those rises are measured against recent editions:

  • Edgbaston: £115, up from £65 in 2023
  • Wimbledon: £400, £50 more than 2026
  • Silverstone: £289, up from £189 in 2021

Television access is also under scrutiny as subscriptions multiply and become more expensive.

Why it matters

The price increases are turning live sport into a sharper choice between atmosphere and affordability. Lee Hanlon, an England cricket fan who lives near Edgbaston, says he will skip next summer’s Ashes because ordinary supporters are being priced out. A poll on the BBC Sport website found that 95% of respondents considered the Ashes tickets too expensive.

Organisers see a different calculation. Mark Darbon, chief executive of the R&A, says sport now sits within an “experience economy”, where people place greater value on belonging to a live event. The R&A compares its prices with other major sporting occasions when judging value.

That logic explains the market, but it does not settle the argument. An entry-level Edgbaston ticket may roughly match inflation, as the venue says, yet the jump from £65 to £115 still feels enormous to anyone paying for a full day out. The real question is whether elite sport can keep charging more without making its traditional crowd feel like guests in someone else’s luxury experience.

It is not yet clear whether these prices will reduce attendances. But the direction is unmistakable: watching the biggest events is becoming less like a routine weekend plan and more like a purchase that needs defending.
