What changed
A new ranking revisits the best British footballers to move abroad since 2000. The published list includes Kieran Trippier, Fikayo Tomori and Jadon Sancho, each making a mark in a different way.
- Trippier won La Liga with Atlético Madrid.
- Tomori won Serie A with AC Milan in 2021-22.
- Sancho recorded 50 goals and 64 assists in 137 games for Borussia Dortmund.
Why it matters
The ranking captures how unusual a move abroad once felt for British players, and how normal it has become. Eight players from England’s latest World Cup squad are currently overseas, while Scotland have even more abroad, mainly in Serie A.
The strongest lesson is that success overseas has not followed one script. Trippier revived his career in Madrid after falling out of favour at Tottenham. Tomori turned a long stay at Milan into a league title and a place in the Serie A team of the season. Sancho left Manchester City at 17 and became a major attacking force in Germany.
That makes Sancho’s legacy especially significant. His Dortmund spell was not only productive; it showed young British players that moving early can be a route to development rather than a detour. The ranking is ultimately an editorial judgment, not a definitive statistical table, but its central point holds: British football’s best exports are no longer curiosities. They are part of the European game’s regular traffic.
