What changed

Coco Gauff said she received racist comments and direct messages after stopping play during her China Open win over 16-year-old Sun Xinran in Beijing.

Gauff halted the point while serving at 4-5 because a light in the court’s side panels was flickering. Sun accepted her apology, but Gauff then won the next three points, took the set 7-5 and finished with a 6-1 victory to reach the last 16.

Why it matters

A brief interruption became a much larger test of how quickly a disputed moment can turn personal online. Gauff’s message was direct: disagreement about a point is fair; racist abuse is not.

The tennis itself was settled on court. Gauff recovered from 4-5 down, levelled at 5-5 and lost only one game afterward. The unresolved issue is what happens away from the court, where the volume of abuse can overwhelm the original incident and put the player on trial for making a safety-related call.

This is part of a wider problem in women’s tennis. A July report found more than 12,000 abusive posts and messages aimed at female players in 2025. The WTA and World Tennis have said collective action is needed, but Gauff’s experience shows why broad statements matter only if they lead to a response when abuse arrives.
